Steriods in sports Essay example -- essays research papers
Steroids in Sports à à à à à In my opinion, the initial reason a person starts to play any sport is to either to have fun or mainly to emulate their favorite sports figures. So many kids want to swing a bat like Barry Bonds, or rush the football like Jamal Lewis, or play soccer like Pelleââ¬â¢. When I was younger, I wanted to tackle like Lawrence Taylor. Since these children like to do what they see their role models do, what happens if they find out that their favorite person boosts his skills by using illegal substances? Since there are a lot of impressionable minds out there, some of those little fans may be swayed to do the same when they get the chance to. Steroids are addictive, just like marijuana or other illegal substances, and there are some well known athletes abusing them to get a quick ââ¬Å"power upâ⬠instead of actually working hard to achieve muscle tone, or that extra intensity; that extra strength that they think they need. Steroids are seemingly displacing hard wor k in todayââ¬â¢s sports world. à à à à à I asked coach Wilson, my hometown football coach, about his opinion on steroids. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve caught some boys taking steroids personally, and I think the main reason that itââ¬â¢s taken is competition. They usually do not know how to lose, and they will do almost anything to win.â⬠When I asked him what could be done to improve on this problem, ââ¬Å" Well the only thing that I can think of to sort of contain this problem is random testing for athletes.â⬠ââ¬Å"There is now a cream out that players do not have to inject into their blood stream, they just have to rub it on their skin, and it wonââ¬â¢t show up in a blood test.â⬠He went on to state that ââ¬Å"In Highschool itââ¬â¢s pretty easy to point out most of the kids using.â⬠ââ¬Å"You can mainly tell by their attitude, and their size for a highschool student.â⬠Also, he stated that ââ¬Å"steroids donââ¬â¢t really make you better, I mean they donââ¬â¢t really increase your speed or agility, they just increase your intensity level, and make you bigger as far as muscles go, but itââ¬â¢s not worth it when you think about the risk those people take with their bodies.â⬠Former baseball all-star, Jose Canseco had a book published, call ââ¬Å"Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant Roids, Smash Hits, and How Baseball Got Big.â⬠This book pointed the finger at several players accusing them of steroid abuse. Miguel Tejada was among the p... ...kle, that maybe we would have won a game or two, but never did I think about using steroids for the ââ¬Å"extra edgeâ⬠that I thought I needed. I just used other methods of cheating, like tripping players, or holding players, or when there was a fumble, I would get under the pile and kick, and punch, and twist limbs. I cheated legally and we still did not win many games. I can not say that none of my teammates thought about using, but I do not think so, and from a personal locker room relationship with them, I do not think any of them used steroids while I was on the team. We lost our games honestly, ââ¬Å"well sort of.â⬠à à à à à Steroids are ââ¬Å"eating upâ⬠the sports world as we know it. Whether it is giving players who are already good, unfair advantages, or killing and or crippling steroid abusers for life. All major sports, from baseball to track and field are cracking down on the usage of steroids. There is not yet a way to completely stop it, but random testing, and psychological profiles can help contain the problem. Also the media should use discretion when reporting these problems on the news or in the newspapers, as they would when talking about other substances.

Patient Teaching Essay
Introduction: I have chosen breastfeeding as my teaching topic for this assignment. The specific clientà ¨le will be the new mother at between 2 and 7 days postpartum, newly discharged from hospital. As a community health nurse working with children and young families, I do initial postpartum visits at home. Breastfeeding is a very complex skill, natural, yet sometimes difficult to do. The client is often overwhelmed with information received in hospital, so sessions must be kept short, and made easy to understand. The area in which I work is multicultural. There is often a language barrier which further complicates teaching and learning. Finding a teachable moment is easy (London, p. 95). New mothers are eager for help in providing the best for their babies. Mothers whose babies refuse to latch onto the breast or who have an incorrect latch, may sometimes become very tense and stressed. It is important to remain calm and supportive during teaching. The client must be educated, not simply taught new skills (Rankin, p. 73). The newly acquired information will allow her to make her own decisions and to be the head of her own health care team. Assessment: I have been working with postpartum women for the past 6 years, and have 3 children of my own. I am able to use my own personal experiences with breastfeeding, my last having stopped only 2 years ago. I work well with my co-workers, I know that I cannot do it alone (London, p.51). We help each other every step of the way and have a good back-up system available in the community. These include lactation consultants, breastfeeding clinics, doctors, social workers and community agencies. The learner and her family are at the head of the team (London, p.47). They are usually very motivated to learn and ultimately want what is best for the baby. It is easier to form relationships with the client at home (London, p. 63). The environment is non-threatening to the learner and teacher. I can also learn a lot about the client by observing the home. I have had many clients tell me they were breastfeeding exclusively who had half empty bottles of formula on the kitchen counter. The assessment process begins on the telephone before the visit. All new mothers are contacted when they arrive home. All are offered a home visit, some refuse. By help of a detailed questionnaire, we know the problems to focus on before the visit. This is very helpful as we can be better prepared with the necessary tools. Many patients are ââ¬Å"red flagâ⬠patients (Rankin, p. 160). Some speak very little English, have financial problems, are on welfare, or are single mothers. Culture and religion can influence teaching (London, p.296). It is impossible to generalize about one culture, so we must be careful to dig deeper when presented with a situation which may be affected by oneââ¬â¢s background. The area I work in is multicultural. The women speak many languages and I often need to have a family member translate the teaching. This is sometimes quite challenging as I am not always sure that what is being translated is actually what I am saying! I try not to let my own beliefs get in the way of my patient care. I may not always agree with the decisions of others but always stay focused on the desired outcome. Some clients would prefer to breastfeed and others would prefer to bottle feed but are being influenced by family members. Support from family members generally improves the outcome (Stalling, p.163). The client will have an easier time adjusting to breastfeeding and will breastfeed for a longer period of time with family support. We need to make adjustments in our teaching based on each individuals views. (London, p. 303). We should never make assumptions about anything. Self-efficacy is a very important factor in learning to breastfeed. The learner who thinks she can do it, will be more successful. My department organizes a group that meets at the community center once a week. New mothers have a chance to meet each other and learn about breastfeeding. Using these role-models sometimes helps a woman with low self-efficacy learn to breastfeed (London, p.311). When I walk into a home, I can often tell within the first 10 minutes whether I will have to make a follow-up visit. At a typical visit I assess the baby and mother, help with breastfeeding if necessary and provide the mother with helpful information she will need in the first few months of the babyââ¬â¢s life. A typical visit lasts 1-2 hours. I usually provide printed material on the common breastfeeding problems to my clients. On the website WWW.Medela.com, there is very helpful information on breastfeeding in several languages. I use this site often to print out information on latching, sore nipples and engorgement. The information on the site is generally well written and edited. The vocabulary is easy enough to understand by most women. It is grammatically correct. There are no difficult or very technical terms. The subject in this paper is a mother of two who did not breastfeed her first child. She speaks English and works as a clerk in a drugstore. She has a university degree, so can easily understand information at the 12th grade level. Planning: The general goal of this teaching is for the client to be able to breastfeed in the proper manner and to understand the benefits of breastfeeding in order to prolong breastfeeding for as long as possible. The following are the specific objectives for this clientà ¨le. At the end of the session: The client will state at least 5 benefits of breastfeeding vs bottle feeding. The client will demonstrate 3 different breastfeeding positions one time each. The client will describe the treatments for engorgement and sore nipples. The client will list 3 resources for further information after the visit. The client will recognize and state 3 factors which indicate the baby is receiving sufficient milk from breastfeeding. Teaching tools used will be demonstration, discussion, and hand-outs. It is important to prioritize learning needs. There are some facts which are very interesting but which are not necessary for the client to know. (Rankin, p. 191 and 197). The breastfeeding mother does not need to know the physiology of the breast, but she does need to understand the relationship between frequent feedings and increased milk production. Content outline: Discussion of the benefits of breastfeeding. Discussion of the factors indicating that the baby is receiving sufficient milk. Observation of the client breastfeeding using 3 different positions. Demonstration of proper breastfeeding technique for each position as needed. Discussion of breast engorgement and sore nipples and their management. Discussion of resources for further information about breastfeeding and the assess the need for a follow-up visit. * The teaching is mostly done by discussion and demonstration. This is a good way to get continuous feedback from the client. It is also a good way to ensure that all the important material is not forgotten. Practice makes perfect. Adult learners need to be involved in the teaching (Rankin, p. 196) and want to apply what they learn right away. This is especially important with breastfeeding, as the new mother must be able to master it within a very short time. It is not always necessary to cover all the information with each client. Some are too overwhelmed with information already; others may already have the knowledge base and simply need help with latching. Implementation: I generally start teaching about breastfeeding immediately after having evaluated the client. I begin by discussion of the benefits of breastfeeding and the factors which indicate that the baby is receiving enough milk. Many women do not believe that they have enough milk and worry about the need to offer a supplement. It is important to explain this to them. If they do offer a supplement, their own milk supply may be reduced. Then, I assist the client at putting the baby to the breast using different positions as needed. I sometimes use a dummy breast to show the client the correct angle to use while feeding to ensure a proper latch. Visual aids sometimes help to make it seem more real. When that has been mastered, I continue with a discussion of the two most common problems found in the first weeks of breastfeeding, sore nipples and engorgement. I provide the client with written material on proper latching technique, sore nipple management and engorgement. Since these problems sometimes occur after a few days or weeks, it is helpful for the client to have this information in writing. I also provide an information sheet on the resources the client can use if she should need further help after the visit. I generally make a follow-up call one to three days after the visit and a follow-up visit as necessary. I sometimes refer the clients to the company Medelaââ¬â¢s website, www.medela.com. This site provides helpful information on breastfeeding and the common associated problems. The computer is only a tool, however. It provides information, not education (London, p. 246). I remain available to my clients by telephone or by email at all times. Recording transcribed: (T=teacher, L=client) T: Did you breastfeed with your first child? L: No. I tried for about 3 days but gave up due to the pain. T: Did you receive any help? L: No. But it was less important to me then. I was ok with bottle feeding. T: Do you want to breastfeed Joshua? L: Yes. I will be taking a year off of work and would like to breastfeed him as long as possible. Many of my friends have had babies in the past years and all are breastfeeding. They make it look so easy. I decided to try harder this time. T: Joshua is 3 days old. How have you been feeding him? L: I tried to put him at the breast right after birth but he was too sleepy, and so was I. The first day he had a few bottles. Yesterday, I tried for the first time. I think it went ok but my nipples are very sore. I would like to learn how to breastfeed properly. T: Well, we can discuss a few things now and I can show you the proper technique for a few different positions when he wakes up. L: OK T: First of all, why do you want to breastfeed? L: Everyone is telling me that it is the best thing for my baby. T: They are right, but what do you think? L: I want to do whatââ¬â¢s best for Joshua. T: Breast milk is definitely the best for babies. One of the best things about breastfeeding is that the milk is always ready. You donââ¬â¢t have any bottles to warm up or prepare, especially at 2:00 in the morning when youââ¬â¢re exhausted. Because it is available right away, you donââ¬â¢t have to make the baby wait. This will make it easier to calm him before he gets too agitated. It is also a great time to bond with the baby and will make Joshua feel more secure. Breast milk is the best thing for your baby. Do you know what colostrum is? L: Yes. I have been reading up on breastfeeding since I found out I was pregnant again. It is the yellow liquid that comes out before the milk comes in. I know that it helps to prevent jaundice. T: Yes that is true. It acts as a mild laxative to encourage the baby to pass his first stools of meconium. It can also help to prevent ear infections and allergies. It is very rich in nutrients and allergies. Did Julia have jaundice? L: No, she didnââ¬â¢t. T: Do you know of other benefits of breastfeeding? L: I know that breast milk is the perfect formula for babies with the exact right nutrients that they need. It keeps babies from becoming overweight. I also know that it can help me lose the baby fat that much quicker. T: Thatââ¬â¢s true. It can also save you money. The average cost of formula for 1year is about $1800, and that doesnââ¬â¢t include the bottles and other supplies. Breastfeeding requires you to eat about an extra 500 calories per day. This should cost, by comparison about $300 for the year. L: With all the expenses of a new baby, we can use that money for many other things. T: Thatââ¬â¢s for sure. L: Can breastfeeding keep me from getting pregnant again? T: No. It is not a sure form of contraception. Although it is relatively effective in the first 6 months if you breastfeed exclusively. Some women ovulate as early as 6 weeks postpartum even when breastfeeding. L: Good to know. T: Do you know how to tell if the baby is receiving enough milk? L: He will gain weight. T: Yes. Thatââ¬â¢s a very good sign in the long run. There are other things as well. He should have at least 3 urines today since he is 3 days old. Then, you should see one more each day until the sixth day. That means that on the 4th day, he should have at least 4, on the 5th day at least 5 and from the 6th day onwards, at least 6 per day. How many has he had today. L: So far he had 1 at 2:00 and another at 7:00. I donââ¬â¢t think thatââ¬â¢s a problem. T: Good. We would also expect to see a few stools everyday. They should gradually change from the black meconium stools, to brown and then to yellow. Many breastfed babies have a stool with every feed, but some have only 1 or 2 per day. Both are normal. L: He has one almost every time he feeds. T: Thatââ¬â¢s great. He should also be satisfied between feeds. That means he would feed every 1 to 3 hours in the first few weeks and have some period in between when he sleeps or remains calm. You told me that he feeds about every 2.5 hours and usually sleeps in between, so it sounds like he is right on target. A baby who is too sleepy and needs to be woken up for feedings may also not be getting enough. Do you have any questions so far? L: No. Iââ¬â¢m glad heââ¬â¢s getting enough milk and canââ¬â¢t wait to see if heââ¬â¢s gained weight. T: You mentioned that your nipples are very sore. Have you done anything for the pain? L: I am taking Advil and I was given some Lanolin ointment at the hospital. Do I need to wash it off before I feed the baby? T: No, it is harmless for the baby. The best way to avoid sore nipples is correct positioning at the breast. If you have sore nipples already, I will show you how to have Joshua latch on properly. Meanwhile, for the soreness, you should apply a small amount of your own breast milk on the nipples after each feeding. Then let it air dry as much as possible. After that, you can apply a bit of lanolin. Sometimes it helps to use different feeding positions during the day. L: The nurse at the hospital told me to let my breasts air dry, but that is not easy in the hospital. How often can I use the lanolin? T: You can use it 2-3 times per day. L: Ok. I will try that. T: Your milk has not come it yet, but should come in in the next few days. It usually comes in by the 3rd to 5th day. It is important to feed regularly to encourage your milk production and also to prevent engorgement. Do you know what engorgement is? L: Yes. I was very engorged about a week after Julia was born. T: Engorgement can be very painful and can make it impossible for the baby to latch on properly. (baby wakes up. L gets the baby) L: What should I do if I get engorged? T: Engorgement usually lasts only a few days. Some women just produce more milk than others. If you get engorged, it is important to continue feeding often. You can apply warm compresses and massage your breasts. If it is more severe, you may need to express a bit of milk for relief, which you can do manually or you may need to use a pump. A well-fitted supportive bra may help. L: I have bought a good bra, but havenââ¬â¢t worn it yet. I will send my husband out to buy a pump today. What kind do you recommend? T: It depends on how often you would like to use it. If you are planning to breastfeed all the time, then a manual pump may be enough. There are however, some inexpensive electrical pumps which you can buy for under $40. These may be easier and quicker to use. You can use them to relieve engorgement and to pump if you go out from time to time. L: My friend uses a Safety First pump which is electric. She bought it at Walmart for about $35 and says it works well. T: Thatââ¬â¢s probably a good choice for you too. Do you have access to the internet? L: Yes T: If you check out the site www.medela.com, you can find information about choosing a pump. If you pump to relieve engorgement, you should only pump for a few minutes. If you pump too much milk, you will only encourage more milk production. L: Thank you, Iââ¬â¢ll check the site. Would you like to see how I feed him now? T: Sure. (L puts baby to the breast using cross cradle positioning. The baby does not take enough of the areola so L has pain.) T: He is not on properly. To release the suction, place your finger gently between his gums, like this. In order to get him to latch on well, you first need to make sure that you are comfortable since you will be breastfeeding so often. Use pillows to get yourself comfortable. Take your time and relax before you start. When you are ready, make sure the babyââ¬â¢s nose is facing the nipple. His head should be aligned with his body. Gently stroke his upper lip with your nipple. When he opens his mouth, pull him quickly towards you, so that he can take as much of the areola as possible. L: How do I know if he is taking enough? T: The most important cue is that you will have no pain. Generally the babyââ¬â¢s chin is touching the bottom of the breast, and there is a small space between his nose and your breast. Hold your baby close to you and support his head. There is no normal or standard way to breastfeed. If the baby is feeding well and you have no pain, it is working well. L: I donââ¬â¢t feel any pain now. T: Can you hear him swallow? L: Yes. T: Excellent. Then you are doing it very well. Notice how his body is aligned with his head, he is most comfortable that way. Look at his chin and his nose. See how they are positioned. You can see that he has opened his mouth very wide and is taking enough of the breast. Would you like me to show you how to hold him in some other positions? L: Yes. I would like to learn how to lie down to feed. It would be so much easier at night. T: Thatââ¬â¢s true. When youââ¬â¢re very tired, itââ¬â¢s a lot easier. The basics are the same. You want to ensure that the baby is facing you and that his body is aligned with his head. Make yourself comfortable. Use a pillow behind your back or between your knees if you need one. (L Demonstrates the technique.) T: That is very good. Are you comfortable? L: Yes, very. And no pain! T: Breastfeeding is not always as easy as some people make it seem. It takes practice. The beginning is a learning process for you and for the baby. Let me show you one more position that you may like to use. This is the football hold. It is easier to use when the baby is small like Joshua; but is sometimes more difficult later on. Hold him so that his legs and body are under your arm, like this. Then place your hand under his head and neck. If youââ¬â¢ve ever played football, thatââ¬â¢s how a football is held. L: I donââ¬â¢t like that one. It is much easier the other way. T: Not everybody likes that position. You have to do whatââ¬â¢s best for you and for your baby so use the position thatââ¬â¢s most comfortable. (Baby weighed ââ¬â lost 8.5% of birth weight) T: He lost a bit more weight. But thatââ¬â¢s normal. Most breastfed babies lose 10% or more of their birth weight in the first few days. They usually regain their birth weight within 10 days. Do you remember how to tell if he is drinking enough? L: Yes. He should have at least 6 wet diapers every day after the 6th day and a couple of stools. He should also wake up alone to feed and sleep well between feedings. And of course, he should gain weight. T: Exactly. T: I will be returning to weigh Joshua again Wednesday (in 48 hrs). I will continue to follow him until he starts to gain some weight. If you need help before then, you can call the CLSC (community clinic) at the number I gave you earlier. As I told you earlier, there is a breastfeeding clinic every Thursday morning as well. At the clinics, there are nurses available to weight the baby and to help you more with breastfeeding. Here is some information on breastfeeding that we discussed today (pamphlets on latching, sore nipples and engorgement given). If you have any questions about them, let me know. Evaluation of learner: I always do a telephone follow-up within 1-3 days. This is very effective as the client will have had some time to process all the information (London, p.62). If necessary, a repeat visit will also be planned. Unfortunately I cannot always have the client do three separate demonstrations (London, p. 386) due to budget and time constraints. Discussion worked best with the subject in this paper. She was educated and was eager to learn proper techniques. She had self-efficacy, skills and knowledge ââ¬â all important factors if changing behaviors (Rankin, p 292). She was alert and very interested in learning. She participated in the discussion. She was able to apply the information immediately during my visit. At the follow-up visit 2 days later, the client was doing very well. She was able to breastfeed without any pain or difficulty. We discussed engorgement again, a problem which had developed since my first visit. She explained what she had done to relieve the engorgement, which was how I had explained it to her. The ââ¬Å"what ifâ⬠scenario had worked .(London p.386) Evaluation of teacher: I could have done more assessment of the learner while I was teaching. I find myself being drawn into a routine with my teaching that is sometimes hard to get out of. Most of the teaching is very repetitive from one client to the next, however, each client learns in her own fashion. I try to keep the client interested in what I have to say. I encourage her and give her positive feedback. Sometimes I forget the goals of the session and get off track, or provide the client with unnecessary information. I find that using a checklist helps me to stay on the right track and to not omit anything important. Evaluation of resources: The handouts I usually give out to my clients on latching, engorgement and sore nipples, all score over 70% by the SAM test (Rankin, p.238), thus making them good resources. I provide this information to my clients to use as the situations arise. Although I explain the handouts to all my clients, not all women get engorged; for those that do, it usually happens after my visit. Having the handouts at home allows them to refer to the information as a reference when they need it most. Conclusion: The teaching session went very well. The client was intelligent, educated and eager to learn. Overall this teaching technique used for teaching breastfeeding works well with most of the clientà ¨le I see at home. Every person is unique and adjustments always need to be made accordingly. Bibliography: Forrest, S. (2004). Learning and teaching: The reciprocal link. The Great Awakening Of The 1730s - 1630 Words
The Great Awakening of the 1730s significantly altered the social structure of early Americal colonial society. The laityââ¬â¢s internal subjectivity and passional experiences were validated in regards to religious sentiments. This novel type of engagement of the laity is significant, as previously voiceless social and racial classes were given the authority to proclaim and propagate their interpretations of biblical scripture. The New Lightsââ¬â¢ emphasis on the transformative power of the Holy Spirit severed social norms and exalted and justified the personal experiences of commoners against that of the old order. Moreover, the revivals challenged the prevailing social and religious elite by questioning the sincerity of their religious convictions. The conservative religious rationalism was challenged by a novel and enthusiastic expression of faith characterized by personal experience and individual sensory experience. The New Lights, or the revivalist leaders, deplored the a bundance of inequality between rich landowners in relation to poor and indebted frontier farmers. I interpret the revival as an intellectual severance from the old order, or the Old Lightââ¬â¢s doctrineââ¬â¢s of salvation. Jonathan Edwards, the revivalââ¬â¢s prominent contributor, launched an attack against the rationalism and conservatism of the old religious order and emphasized a New Birth, characterized by passional and experiential conversion. Media Violence Essay - 1420 Words
Violence in the Media and how it Affects Society The effect of media is profound and far-reaching. All over the world, the media influences our values and intrudes upon our deep-seated ideologies and beliefs. Indeed the media has been a powerful force in influencing peopleââ¬â¢s perceptions, and more importantly, their behavior as well. Business, politicians, and showbiz personalities pay huge sums of money to media firms in order create an image or change an existing one. Politics in particular, has been making use of the media to generate public support for their campaigns and support for certain policies and legislations. Racism Is Not A Republican Problem - 1230 Words
And that is my point how is that going to bring about change Not recognizing it has certainly not brought about change. Just recognizing that you have privilege isn t enough, but if you don t even get that far, you re not equipped with the intellectual tools you need to actually understand the issues, their historical context, or how to help alleviate them. instead of getting over the Leftist agenda I never brought in leftist politics into this discussion. Island of the Sequined Love Nun Chapter 1~3 Free Essays
PART ONE The Phoenix 1 The Cannibal Tree Tucker Case awoke to find himself hanging from a breadfruit tree by a coconut fiber rope. He was suspended facedown about six feet above the sand in some sort of harness, his hands and feet tied together in front of him. He lifted his head and strained to look around. We will write a custom essay sample on Island of the Sequined Love Nun Chapter 1~3 or any similar topic only for you Order Now He could see a white sand beach fringed with coconut palms, a coconut husk fire, a palm frond hut, a path of white coral gravel that led into a jungle. Completing the panorama was the grinning brown face of an ancient native. The native reached up with a clawlike hand and pinched Tuckerââ¬â¢s cheek. Tucker screamed. ââ¬Å"Yum,â⬠the native said. ââ¬Å"Who are you?â⬠Tucker asked. ââ¬Å"Where am I? Whereââ¬â¢s the navigator?â⬠The native just grinned. His eyes were yellow, his hair a wild tangle of curl and bird feathers, and his teeth were black and had been filed to points. He looked like a potbellied skeleton upholstered in distressed leather. Puckered pink scars decorated his skin; a series of small scars on his chest described the shape of a shark. His only clothing was a loincloth woven from some sort of plant fiber. Tucked in the waist cord was a vicious-looking bush knife. The native patted Tuckerââ¬â¢s cheek with an ashy callused palm, then turned and walked away, leaving him hanging. ââ¬Å"Wait!â⬠Tucker shouted. ââ¬Å"Let me down. I have money. I can pay you.â⬠The native ambled down the path without looking back. Tucker struggled against the harness, but only managed to put himself into a slow spin. As he turned, he caught sight of the navigator, hanging uncon scious a few feet away. ââ¬Å"Hey, you alive?â⬠The navigator didnââ¬â¢t stir, but Tucker could see that he was breathing. ââ¬Å"Hey, Kimi, wake up!â⬠Still no reaction. He strained against the rope around his wrists, but the bonds only seemed to tighten. After a few minutes, he gave up, exhausted. He rested and looked around for something to give this bizarre scene some meaning. Why had the native hung them in a tree? He caught movement in his peripheral vision and turned to see a large brown crab struggling at the end of a string tied to a nearby branch. There was his answer: They were hung in the tree, like the crab, to keep them fresh until they were ready to be eaten. Tucker shuddered, imagining the nativeââ¬â¢s black teeth closing on his shin. He tried to focus on a way to escape before the native returned, but his mind kept diving into a sea of regrets and second guesses, looking for the exact place where the world had turned on him and put him in the cannibal tree. Like most of the big missteps he had taken in his life, it had started in a bar. The Seattle Airport Holiday Inn lounge was all hunter green, brass rails, and oak veneer. Remove the bar and it looked like Macyââ¬â¢s menââ¬â¢s depart-ment. It was one in the morning and the bartender, a stout, middle-aged Hispanic woman, was polishing glasses and waiting for her last three customers to leave so she could go home. At the end of a bar a young wo-man in a short skirt and too much makeup sat alone. Tucker Case sat next to a businessman several stools down. ââ¬Å"Lemmings,â⬠the businessman said. ââ¬Å"Lemmings?â⬠asked Tucker. They were drunk. The businessman was heavy, in his late fifties, and wore a charcoal gray suit. Broken veins glowed on his nose and cheeks. ââ¬Å"Most people are lemmings,â⬠the businessman continued. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s why they fail. They behave like suicidal rodents.â⬠ââ¬Å"But youââ¬â¢re a higher level of rodent?â⬠Tucker Case said with a smart-ass grin. He was thirty, just under six foot, with neatly trimmed blond hair and blue eyes. He wore navy slacks, sneakers, and a white shirt with blue-and-gold epaulets. His captainââ¬â¢s hat sat on the bar next to a gin and tonic. He was more interested in the girl at the end of the bar than in the businessmanââ¬â¢s conversation, but he didnââ¬â¢t know how to move without being obvious. ââ¬Å"No, but Iââ¬â¢ve kept my lemming behavior limited to my personal relationships. Three wives.â⬠The businessman waved a swizzle stick under Tuckerââ¬â¢s nose. ââ¬Å"Success in America doesnââ¬â¢t require any special talent or any kind of extra effort. You just have to be consistent and not fuck up. Thatââ¬â¢s how most people fail. They canââ¬â¢t stand the pressure of getting what they want, so when they see that they are getting close, they engineer some sort of fuckup to undermine their success.â⬠The lemming litany was making Tucker uncomfortable. Heââ¬â¢d been on a roll for the last four years, going from bartending to flying corporate jets. He said, ââ¬Å"Maybe some people just donââ¬â¢t know what they want. Maybe they only look like lemmings.â⬠ââ¬Å"Everyone knows what they want. You know what you want, donââ¬â¢t you?â⬠ââ¬Å"Sure, I know,â⬠Tucker said. What he wanted right now was to get out of this conversation and get to know the girl at the end of the bar before closing time. Sheââ¬â¢d been staring at him for five minutes. ââ¬Å"What?â⬠The businessman wanted an answer. He waited. ââ¬Å"I just want to keep doing what Iââ¬â¢m doing. Iââ¬â¢m happy.â⬠The businessman shook his head. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry, son, but I donââ¬â¢t buy it. Youââ¬â¢re going over the cliff with the rest of the lemmings.â⬠ââ¬Å"You should be a motivational speaker,â⬠Tuck said, his attention drawn by the girl, who was getting up, putting money on the bar, picking up her cigarettes, and putting them into her purse. She said, ââ¬Å"I know what I want.â⬠The businessman turned and gave his best avuncular-horndog smile. ââ¬Å"And whatââ¬â¢s that, sweetheart?â⬠She walked up to Tucker and pressed her breasts against his shoulder. She had brown hair that fell in curls to her shoulders, blue eyes, and a nose that was a tad crooked, but not horribly so. Up close she didnââ¬â¢t even look old enough to drink. Heavy makeup had aged her at a distance. Looking the businessman in the eye, as if she didnââ¬â¢t notice Tucker at all, she said, ââ¬Å"I want to join the mile-high club, and I want to join it tonight. Can you help me?â⬠The businessman looked at Tuckerââ¬â¢s captainââ¬â¢s hat on the bar, then back at the girl. Slowly, defeated, he shook his head. She pressed harder against Tuckerââ¬â¢s shoulder. ââ¬Å"How about you?â⬠Tucker grinned at the businessman and shrugged by way of apology. ââ¬Å"I just want to keep doing what Iââ¬â¢m doing.â⬠The girl put on his captainââ¬â¢s hat and pulled him off of the barstool. He dug into his pocket for money as she dragged him toward the exit. The businessman raised a hand. ââ¬Å"No, Iââ¬â¢ve got the drinks, son. You just remember what I said.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thanks,â⬠Tuck said. Outside in the lobby the girl said, ââ¬Å"My nameââ¬â¢s Meadow.â⬠She kept her eyes forward as she walked, taking curt marching steps as if she was leading him on an antiterrorist mission instead of seducing him. ââ¬Å"Pretty name,â⬠Tucker said. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m Tucker Case. People call me Tuck.â⬠She still didnââ¬â¢t look up. ââ¬Å"Do you have a plane, Tuck?â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve got access to one.â⬠He smiled. This was great. Great! ââ¬Å"Good. You get me into the mile-high club tonight and I wonââ¬â¢t charge you. Iââ¬â¢ve always wanted to do it in a plane.â⬠Tucker stopped. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re aâ⬠¦I mean, you do this forâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ She stopped and turned to look him in the eye for the first time. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re kind of a geek, arenââ¬â¢t you?â⬠ââ¬Å"Thank you. I find you incredibly attractive too.â⬠Actually, he did. ââ¬Å"No, youââ¬â¢re attractive. I mean, you look fine. But I thought a pilot would have a little more on the ball.â⬠ââ¬Å"Is this part of that mistress-humiliation-handcuff stuff?â⬠ââ¬Å"No, thatââ¬â¢s extra. Iââ¬â¢m just making conversation.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, I see.â⬠He was beginning to have second thoughts. He had to fly to Houston in the morning, and he really should get some sleep. Still, this would make a great story to tell the guys back at the hangar ââ¬â if he left out the part about him being a suicidal rodent and her being a prostitute. But he could tell the story without really doing it, couldnââ¬â¢t he? He said, ââ¬Å"I probably shouldnââ¬â¢t fly. Iââ¬â¢m a little drunk.â⬠ââ¬Å"Then you wonââ¬â¢t mind if I go back to the bar and grab your friend? I might as well make some money.â⬠ââ¬Å"It could be dangerous.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s the point, isnââ¬â¢t it?â⬠She smiled. ââ¬Å"No, I mean really dangerous.â⬠ââ¬Å"I have condoms.â⬠Tucker shrugged. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll get a cab.â⬠Ten minutes later they were heading across the wet tarmac toward a group of corporate jets. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s pink!â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, so?â⬠ââ¬Å"You fly a pink jet?â⬠As Tuck opened the hatch and lowered the steps, he had the sinking feeling that maybe the businessman at the bar had been right. 2 I Thought This Was a Nonsmoking Flight Most jets (especially those unburdened by the weight of passengers or fuel) have a glide rate that is quite acceptable for landing without power. But Tucker has made an error in judgment caused by seven gin and tonics and the distraction of Meadow straddling him in the pilot seat. He thinks, per-haps, that he should have said something when the fuel light first went on, but Meadow had already climbed into the saddle and he didnââ¬â¢t want to seem inattentive. Now the glide path is too steep, the runway a little too far. He uses a little body English in pulling back on the steering yoke, which Meadow takes for enthusiasm. Tucker brings the pink Gulfstream jet into SeaTac a little low, tearing off the rear landing gear on a radar antenna a second before impact with the runway, which sends Meadow over the steering yoke to bounce off the windscreen and land unconscious across the instrument panel. The jetââ¬â¢s wings flap once ââ¬â a dying flamingo trying to free itself from a tar pit ââ¬â and rip off in a shriek of sparks, flame, and black smoke, then spin back into the air before beating themselves to pieces on the runway. Tucker, strapped into the pilotââ¬â¢s seat, lets loose a prolonged scream that pushes the sound of tearing metal out of his head. The wingless Gulfstream slides down the runway like hellââ¬â¢s own bobsled, leaving a wake of greasy smoke and aluminum confetti. Firemen and paramedics scramble into their vehicles and pull out onto the runway in pursuit of it. In a moment of analytical detachment, one of the firemen turns to a companion and says, ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s not enough fire. He must have been flying on fumes.â⬠Tucker sees the end of the runway coming up, an array of an tennae, some spiffy blue lights, a chain-link fence, and a grassy open field where whatââ¬â¢s left of the Gulfstream will fragment into pink shrapnel. He realizes that heââ¬â¢s looking at his own death and screams the words ââ¬Å"Oh, fuck!â⬠, meeting the FAAââ¬â¢s official requirement for last words to be retrieved from the charred black box. Suddenly, as if someone has hit a cosmic pause button, the cockpit goes quiet. Movement stops. A manââ¬â¢s voice says, ââ¬Å"Is this how you want to go?â⬠Tucker turns toward the voice. A dark man in a gray flight suit sits in the copilotââ¬â¢s seat, waiting for an answer. Tuck canââ¬â¢t seem to see his face, even though they are facing each other. ââ¬Å"Well?â⬠ââ¬Å"No,â⬠Tucker answers. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢ll cost you,â⬠the pilot says. Then heââ¬â¢s gone. The copilotââ¬â¢s seat is empty and the roar of tortured metal fills the cabin. Before Tucker can form the words ââ¬Å"What the hell?â⬠in his mind, the wingless jet crashes through the antenna, the spiffy blue lights, the chain-link fence, and into the field, soggy from thirty consecutive days of Seattle rain. The mud caresses the fuselage, dampens the sparks and flames, clings and cloys and slows the jet to a steaming stop. Tuck hears metal crackle as it settles, sirens, the friendly chime of the FASTEN SEAT BELTS sign turning off. Welcome to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The local time is 2:00A.M., the outside temperature is 63 degrees, there is a semiconscious hooker gurgling at your feet. The cabin fills with black smoke from fried wires and vaporized hydraulic fluid. One breath burns down his windpipe like drain cleaner, telling Tucker that a second breath may kill him. He unfastens the harness and reaches into the dark for Meadow, connecting with her lace camisole, which comes away in shreds in his hands. He stands, bends over, wraps an arm around her waist, and picks her up. Sheââ¬â¢s light, maybe a hundred pounds, but Tucker has forgotten to pull up his pants and Jockey shorts, which cuff his ankles. He teeters and falls backward onto the control console between the pilot seats. Jutting from the console is the flap actuator lever, a foot-long strip of steel topped by a plastic arrowheadlike tip. The tip catches Tuck in the rear of the scrotum. His and Meadowââ¬â¢s combined weight drive him down on the lever, which tears though his scrotum, runs up inside the length of his penis, and emerges in a spray of blood. There are no words for the pain. No breath, no thought. Just deafening white and red noise. Tucker feels himself passing out and welcomes it. He drops Meadow, but she is conscious enough to hold on to his neck, and as she falls she pulls him off the lever, which reams its way back through him again. Without realizing it, he is standing, breathing. His lungs are on fire. He has to get out. He throws an arm around Meadow and drags her three feet to the hatch. He releases the hatch and it swings down, half open. Itââ¬â¢s de-signed to function as a stairway to the ground, designed for a plane that is standing on landing gear. Gloved hands reach into the opening and start pulling at it. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re going to get you out of there,â⬠a fireman says. The hatch comes open with a shriek. Tuck sees blue and red flashing lights illuminating raindrops against a black sky, making it appear as if it is raining fire. He takes a single breath of fresh air, says, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve torn off my dick,â⬠and falls forward. 3 And You Lost Your Frequent Flyer Miles As with most things in his life, Tucker Case was wrong about the extent of his injuries. As they wheeled him though the emergency room, he con-tinued to chant, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve torn off my dick! Iââ¬â¢ve torn off my dick!â⬠into his oxygen mask until a masked physician appeared at his side. ââ¬Å"Mr. Case, you have not torn off your penis. Youââ¬â¢ve damaged some major blood vessels and some of the erectal tissue. And youââ¬â¢ve also severed the tendon that runs from the tip of the penis to the base of the brain.â⬠The doctor, a woman, pulled down her mask long enough to show Tucker a grin. ââ¬Å"You should be fine. Weââ¬â¢re taking you into surgery now.â⬠ââ¬Å"What about the girl?â⬠ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s got a mild concussion and some bruises, but sheââ¬â¢ll be okay. Sheââ¬â¢ll probably go home in a few hours.â⬠ââ¬ËThatââ¬â¢s good. Doc, will I be able to? I mean, will I everâ⬠¦?â⬠ââ¬Å"Be still, Mr. Case. I want you to count backward from one hundred.â⬠ââ¬Å"Is there a reason for that ââ¬â for the counting?â⬠ââ¬Å"You can say the Pledge of Allegiance if you want.â⬠ââ¬Å"But I canââ¬â¢t stand up.â⬠ââ¬Å"Just count, smart-ass.â⬠When Tucker came to, through the fog of anesthesia he saw a picture of himself superimposed over a burning pink jet. Looking down on the scene was the horrified face of the matriarch of pyramid makeup sales, Mary Jean Dobbins ââ¬â Mary Jean to the world. Then the picture was gone, replaced by a rugged male face and perfect smile. ââ¬Å"Tuck, youââ¬â¢re famous. You made the Enquirer.â⬠The voice of Jake Skye, Tuckââ¬â¢s only male friend and premier jet mechanic for Mary Jean. ââ¬Å"You crashed just in time to make the latest edition.â⬠ââ¬Å"My dick?â⬠Tuck said, struggling to sit up. There was what appeared to be a plaster ostrich egg sitting on his lap. A tube ran out the middle of it. Jake Skye, tall, dark, and unkempt ââ¬â half Apache, half truck stop waitress ââ¬â said, ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s going to smart. But the doc says youââ¬â¢ll play the violin again.â⬠Jake sat in a chair next to Tuckââ¬â¢s bed and opened the tabloid. ââ¬Å"Look at this. Oprahââ¬â¢s skinny again. Carrots, grapefruit, and amphetamines.â⬠ââ¬Å"Tucker Case moaned. ââ¬Å"What about the girl? What was her name?â⬠ââ¬Å"Meadow Malackovitch,â⬠Jake said, looking at the paper. ââ¬Å"Wow, Oprahââ¬â¢s fucking Elvis. You got to give that woman credit. She stays busy. By the way, theyââ¬â¢re going to move you to Houston. Mary Jean wants you where she can keep an eye on you.â⬠ââ¬Å"The girl, Jake?â⬠Jake looked up from the paper. ââ¬Å"You donââ¬â¢t want to know.â⬠ââ¬Å"They said she was going to be okay. Is she dead?â⬠ââ¬Å"Worse. Pissed off. And speaking of pissed off, thereââ¬â¢s some FAA guys outside who are waiting to talk to you, but the doctor wouldnââ¬â¢t let them in. And Iââ¬â¢m supposed to call Mary Jean as soon as youââ¬â¢re coherent. Iââ¬â¢d ad-vise against that ââ¬â becoming coherent, I mean. And then thereââ¬â¢s a whole bunch of reporters. The nurses are keeping them all out.â⬠ââ¬Å"Howââ¬â¢d you get in?â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m your only living relative.â⬠ââ¬Å"My mother will be pleased to hear that.â⬠ââ¬Å"Brother, your mother doesnââ¬â¢t even want to claim you. You totally fucked the dog on this one.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m fired, then?â⬠ââ¬Å"Count on it. In fact, Iââ¬â¢d say youââ¬â¢d be lucky to get a license to operate a riding lawnmower.â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know how to do anything but fly. One bad landing?â⬠ââ¬Å"No, Tuck, a bad landing is when the overheads pop open and dump peopleââ¬â¢s gym bags. You crashed. If it makes you feel any better, with the Gulfstream gone Iââ¬â¢m not going to have any work for at least six months. They may not even get another jet.â⬠ââ¬Å"Is the FAA filing charges?â⬠Jake Skye looked at his paper to avoid Tuckââ¬â¢s eyes. ââ¬Å"Look, man, do you want me to lie to you? I came up here because I thought youââ¬â¢d rather hear it from me. You were drinking. You wrecked a million dollarsââ¬â¢ worth of SeaTacââ¬â¢s equipment in addition to the plane. Youââ¬â¢re lucky youââ¬â¢re not dead.â⬠ââ¬Å"Jake, look at me.â⬠Jake dropped the paper to his lap and sighed. ââ¬Å"What?â⬠ââ¬Å"Am I going to jail?â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve got to go, man.â⬠Jake stood. ââ¬Å"You heal up.â⬠He turned to leave the room. ââ¬Å"Jake!â⬠Jake Skye stopped and looked over his shoulder. Tucker could see the disappointment in his friendââ¬â¢s eyes. ââ¬Å"What were you thinking?â⬠Jake said. ââ¬Å"She talked me into it. I knew it wasnââ¬â¢t a good idea, but she was persistent.â⬠Jake came to the side of the bed and leaned in close. ââ¬Å"Tucker, whatââ¬â¢s it take for you to get it? Listen close now, buddy, because this is your last lesson, okay? Iââ¬â¢m out of a job because of you. Youââ¬â¢ve got to make your own decisions. You canââ¬â¢t let someone else always tell you what to do. You have to take some responsibility.â⬠ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢t believe Iââ¬â¢m hearing this from you. Youââ¬â¢re the one who got me into this business.â⬠ââ¬Å"Exactly. Youââ¬â¢re thirty years old, man. You have to start thinking for yourself. And with your head, not your dick.â⬠Tucker looked at the bandages in his lap. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry. It all got out of hand. It was like flying on autopilot. I didnââ¬â¢t mean toâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"Time to take the controls, buddy.â⬠ââ¬Å"Jake, something weird happened during the crash. Iââ¬â¢m not sure if it was a hallucination or what. There was someone else in the cockpit.â⬠ââ¬Å"You mean besides the whore?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, just for a second, there was a guy in the copilot seat. He talked to me. Then he disappeared.â⬠Jake sighed. ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s no insanity plea for crashing a plane, Tuck. You lost a lot of blood.â⬠ââ¬Å"This was before I got hurt. While the plane was still skidding.â⬠ââ¬Å"Here.â⬠Jake tucked a silver flask under Tuckââ¬â¢s pillow and punched him in the shoulder. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll call you, man.â⬠He turned and walked away. Tuck called after him, ââ¬Å"What if it was an angel or something?â⬠ââ¬Å"Then youââ¬â¢re in the Enquirer next week too,â⬠Jake said from the door. ââ¬Å"Get some sleep.â⬠How to cite Island of the Sequined Love Nun Chapter 1~3, Essay examples

Tax Exemption free essay sample
According to source B, who strongly believes that churches should be tax exempt, it is apparent that if a church requires the same infrastructure as any other taxpaying enterprise, it should not be free from from paying taxes. All of which is demonstrated through the unbiased facts in Source A, the logical presentation of Source C, and the hardly opinionated Source G, which all include a sense of responsibility and equality. Although it is thought by many believers, such as in Source B, that churches should be tax exempt because of all the wonderful deeds that they do, such as care for the homeless, provide optimism for the hopeless and provide a quantity of social services for citizens, it is not all flowers and dandelions. Churches necessitate the same infrastructure and government services that other tax paying entities must use, such as roads, fire department, and police. If other people must pay taxes in order to have such services made available to them, churches should be required to follow the identical set of laws. It explains how under section 501(c)(3) charitable organizations are eligible to receive tax exemption status and how they are able to go about doing so. As well it states that these section 501(c)(3) organizations are restricted on their lobbying and political activity they are able to participate in, this is something that is obviously not that enforced as laws seeing as these churches are in the news often and can say and do many things in order to try and influence peoples to either convert or get them to have faith in their belief system. In Source C, author Austin Cline presents the problem of which the churches that are in the United States own up to twenty five percent of the land. The land that is being used by these churches could be used by the government for schools, or banks or something that will help everyone, not only those who believe in a higher being. The exclusion they have from taxes must be made up in some other manner, be it from individuals or other tax paying corporations. In this tough time of recession, many families have had to cut back on costs and even go without things that are essential to their being, with that being said, the one thousand dollars that are being paid by each individual in order to make up for the exemption of church taxes, that money ould be put towards a familys expenses and needs. That money belongs to the people who earn it not some building that only some people attend in order to have some hope. Besides only having churches exempt from needed taxes, Source G also enlists the help of thirteen pastors to attempt to make the case that it is not only atheists and non-believers that think that churches should not be tax exempt. Not only does Peter Molnar provide reliable proof that this exemption is not just but he also says that some congress members may be violating tax laws by living in a boarding house, C Street Center that was affiliated with an evangelical Christian network called the Fellowship Foundation. Although Congress has oversight ability, it often ignores many religious institutions and its doings. 12 of these pastors believe that the matters at C Street Center should be investigated, and not only do these pastors and clergy members believe this, many citizens who have to pay for the difference of these tax exempt churches believe so too. With all of the rational explanations that have been provided in sources A, C, and G there is almost no reason to continue to provide additional arguments as to why religious institutions should not be tax exempt. A church or mosque, or any other institution requires the same infrastructure and cost as any other government building, they should not be able to be liberated of this dutiful task and law that everyone should abide by, especially considering that everyone is created equal and having religious institutions be excluded from these necessary taxes could very well be considered unconstitutional.
